Information systems and society : Potential impacts of alternative structures

Abstract

The social effects of new information systems will be determined not only by the ends to which they are put but also by their forms and structures and the ways in which they are implemented. This article examines the theoretical basis for the concern over structure, describes currently dominant systems and structures and outlines some of the alternatives. The potential benefits of alternative systems, to the user and society as a whole, are discussed. It is not too late, the author argues, to favour alternative structures which will promote the development of a desirable 'Information Society'.
