Abstract

This study explores the connection between executives with digital backgrounds and the ESG performance of Chinese-listed firms from 2009 to 2021. Our findings confirm that executives with digital backgrounds positively correlate with corporate ESG performance. This result remains robust after applying the PSM method and alternative robustness checks. Discussion on the potential transmission channels demonstrates that such a positive association between digital executives and corporate ESG performance is mediated by the digital transformation and innovation capability of firms. The heterogeneity analysis reveals that the positive nexus between executives with digital backgrounds and corporate ESG performance is more pronounced in firms receiving greater public attention, offering higher executive remuneration, and operating as technology-intensive or non-state-owned enterprises. Based on these findings, we propose targeted recommendations for enhancing enterprises’ digital talent strategies and improving ESG performance.
