Abstract

Early scocieties that experienced to save themselves from hunger must have been improving and have been transfering his experiences of food preservation to next generation. Empirical food preservation processes like drying smoking, salting and pickling were used for thousands of years, open air drying of agricultural products has been used since man's recognition of solar energy potential. To have a glance on the energy and environmental problems of man which is faced now and will increase later. It is a duty of technologist to practice and popularize renewable sources for any need of man. The renewable energies are the best ones to replace fuel energy and save our planet and the environment. Population growth needs more food, and food storage methods for long periods of time. These processes are energy consuming ones. Drying is one of them. A solar dryer with the capacity of 500 kgs/day has been installed in Bojnord, a city in khorasan province of Iran. The benefit of such systems has been considered in all over the country. The energy saved through introduction of solar dryers in the country has been calculated. The number of animals which can be breeded through wastes of such instalations in the country and their benefit has been regarded. The different models for different geographical conditions have been suggested.
