Abstract

The physical and chemical properties of the copper bipolar plate modified by polypyrrole/carbon black, carbon nanotube and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) which is made by electrospinning, were investigated in this article. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to examine the electrospinning parameters such as voltage, feed rate and distance from the needle tip to the collector to obtain the electrical conductivity of the modified copper bipolar plate. The results indicated that all three factors played a statistically significant role in developing the electrospun-modified bipolar plate to increase the performance of PEM fuel cell by improving the electrical conductivity of the cell. The optimum condition for the electrospun modified bipolar plate was at 0.3 (mL/h) feed rate with 15 (kV) voltage and 12 (cm) distance between the needle tip and the collector. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) shows that conductivity is elevated by optimizing electrospinning parameters to create finer fibers. The collected data provide critical data in selecting electrospinning parameters for the intended application. Moreover, the essential identified parameters were important inputs for the mathematical modeling.
