Abstract

Ionic compressors are a type of compressors that uses ionic liquid (IL) for piston sealing. It is significant to ensure proper amount of IL inside cylinders by controlling quantity and frequency of supplement. However, previous studies rarely referred to IL amount monitoring inside cylinders due to the lack of measurement methods. In this paper, a soft sensing method is proposed for measuring IL amount inside cylinders. The proposed method is not subject to the impact of irregular liquid movement, since the method is essentially based on the thermodynamic laws of hydrogen. Training and validation data are obtained from numerical simulation. Compression volume (CPV) and expansion volume (EPV) can be main features to evaluate IL amount. It is imperative to include data with different valve leakage degrees into training data. A good agreement between predictive and true values can be observed regardless of whether the valves leak or not. It is feasible to adopt the proposed method despite IL overflow. This study can provide a technical reference for IL amount monitoring of ionic compressors.
