Investigation of temporal and spatial distribution of tidal energy in Liuheng waterway via coastal acoustic tomography

Abstract

Tidal energy is a recyclable ocean clean energy source extracted from tidal or ocean floe fields. However, the construction and servicing of tidal energy turbine stations require accurate investigations and site selection. Here, coastal acoustic tomography technology (CAT) is proposed to assess the spatial and temporal variation of ocean environment via sound wave signal transmission between multiple stations. Time series of tidal energy are established through two-way signal travel time, and the extended stream function is fitted with the background flow field to optimize 2D vertical flow field and 3D horizontal flow field, which the safety of the tidal energy construction and the capturable energy is evaluated. The tidal energy distribution around Liuheng channel is investigated and assessed by three-station mirror-type acoustic tomography (MCAT) experiment, and the suitable position for construction of tidal energy turbine generators in the observation area is discussed. In general, the spatial distribution of tidal energy can be indirectly calculated via the reciprocal travel time to provide a reference for tidal energy evaluation, which is suited for assessing the spatial and temporal distribution of tidal energy in small waterways, bays and complex coastal areas.
