Assessment of potential sites for simultaneous exploitation of geothermal energy and CO2 storage in aquifers: Multi-criteria approach

Abstract

The article proposes the use of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to asses potential sites (geological structures) in aquifers for coupled geothermal energy exploitation and carbon dioxide storage. Preliminary assessment of sites can be considered as a multi-criteria decision-making problem. A decision model based on 12 geological criteria was proposed.The method of assessing storage sites in aquifers was validated in terms of simultaneous exploitation of geothermal energy and CO2 storage for two geological structures. These structures have been previously considering as potential storage sites of carbon dioxide in Poland. The results obtained show that the use of the AHP-based approach can be a useful tool for the initial evaluation of potential sites for the simultaneous exploitation of geothermal energy and CO2 storage. The proposed method makes it possible to make an objective decision, the most satisfactory from the point of view of all used decision criteria for selection of the best storage site (geological structure).
