Abstract

An experimental saturated solar pond is constructed using magnesium chloride salt. The temperature and concentration gradients are developed by heating the pond from the bottom and adding powdered salt from the top. The experiments show that there is an optimum heating temperature range within which the gradients can be developed. The pond is also exposed to direct sunlight and is found that stable gradients could be developed. The development of temperature profiles with time and its variation within a day are also studied.
