Wind energy potential in NW Peloponnese—Greece

Abstract

Monthly and yearly histograms of wind speeds were constructed using hourly wind speed data of the Meteorological Station of the University of Patras for a ten year period (1973–1982). Analysis of the histograms showed that over 39% of the hourly wind speeds are greater than 3 m/s with prevailing directions 29% from the NNE-ENE sector and 31% from the SW-W sector. The wind energy potential at the 20 m height was obtained by extrapolation of data at 8.5 m using a power-law expression. The wind energy potential for the half day periods 07:00–18:00 and 19:00–06:00 LST have been estimated.
