Abstract

To realize further cost reduction of photovoltaic solar systems, several kinds of refractive static concentrators have been investigated. Using a ray tracing method, a two-dimensional lens was designed to obtain an optical concentration ratio of 1.75. As for a three-dimensional lens, a higher optical concentration ratio of 2.3 was developed for half-acceptance angles of 30 and 45°. In addition, to clarify the issues for commercial use, a long-life static concentrator was fabricated using a glass-lens with three kinds of Tedlar rear films in a mini-module. These results suggest that the refractive static concentrators are feasible to decrease cost reduction of the current flat-plate modules by reducing an occupation area of costly cells.
