Managing moisture content during storage of logging residues at landings – Effects of coverage strategies

Abstract

The use of logging residue biomass for fuel is still far from its maximum potential, due to low profitability in the supply chain caused by a low product value and high production costs. Although fuel price varies in response to demand, most of the value of forest fuel depends on its energy content, and thereby its moisture content. To maximise the economic value of the fuel, supply chains must be managed to minimise moisture content. One method for this is covering residue stacks to reduce rewetting during storage. The aim of this study was to describe the effects on moisture content in covered and uncovered residue stacks after storage in cases with and without direct ground contact. Results varied between study sites, but the only method that consistently produced a drier fuel compared to no coverage was when biomass cover had been placed both under and over the stacks. This produces the most reliable economic outcome of the tested treatments, and a more homogeneous fuel for the customer. Covering only the tops of stacks may not produce a significantly drier fuel than no cover in dry areas, but will be an insurance against rewetting in rainy areas.
