An experience with solar alternative

Abstract

A vigorous campaign to educate the general masses on “How to invite solar energy into their homes for various uses and comfort living” had been carried out by UPNG students during July/August 1994. It was conducted with the help of visual displays and field surveys in and around the Port Moresby city. The campaign not only met with an overwhelming support from the public but also made a strong impact to their understanding of the “Sun” as a potential source of energy. As part of an overall exercise, the survey's aim was to gauge at public opinion on general approach to energy problems through a set of policy guidelines. The data, thus, collected from 1994 survey on “energy-use preferences” were analysed from various perspectives to compare the choices given for energy-use categories in the domestic sector. The results indicated a very high rating of appreciation for options dealing with technologies that encouraged direct or indirect entry of sun and fresh air to their dwellings, places of work and study. ‘Sustainability through Efficiency Improvements’ and the ‘End-Uses of Energy Approach’ came next to appealing serious considerations through government policies and programmes. Emphasis on the above strategies was in sharp contrast to only a handful of suggestions which advocated living through the enhancement of energy-supply systems.
