Abstract

In adiabatic cooling experiments of Cu(NO3)22.5H2O an anomaly has been observed, which was explained by the onset of spin-ordering in the spin-pair system. Tachiki et al. proposed a spin-1/2 model to investigate this ordering. Ignoring a coupling between z-components of the spin, this model reduces to the XY model in an external field along the z-direction. Using high temperature series, we evaluate some thermodynamic quantities in the disordered region for this model on an f.c.c. lattice. There is a considerable amount of short range order in the region of small effective fields, and immediately above the critical temperature, but it is not large enough to give complete qualitative agreement with the experiment.
