Shear induced order in equilibrium colloidal liquids

Abstract

Theory, computer simulation and experimental results are examined which study the simple shear flow induced interparticle order for pure atomic and colloidal particle suspensions, which have liquid order in equilibrium. It is concluded, at least for colloidal systems, that the large shear rate microstructures do not form strong crystalline, “smectic”, layer or string-like order associated with shear thinning. Rather the order is a distortion of the equilibrium liquid-like order and may at most have quasi-long ranged order correlated with the equilibrium microstructure. New results are presented for the distortion of the equilibrium liquid-like order of dilute but strongly interacting aqueous suspensions of charge stabilized polystyrene spheres.
