String statistical mechanics

Abstract

A review of the statistical mechanics of free string networks is given. This provides an interesting example of a system with canonical thermodynamics and in particular the notion of temperature break down. The results are applied to cosmic strings where they show good agreement with numerical results. They may also have important implications for the behaviour of fundamental strings at high density. Various erroneous recent claims regarding the statistical mechanics of fundamental strings are also discussed, in particular regarding duality, the role of winding modes, and the notion of negative specific heats.
