Abstract

We present a microscopic theory for the long wavelength optical properties of granular metal-insulator films. It incorporates the statistical and geometrical properties of the clusters as given by the theory of percolation. The dependences of the reflectance with respect to the concentration and to the wavelength are predicted and strongly differ from those of effective medium type theories, but present a very good agreement with the available experimental infrared properties of granular Au films with 40 to 500 Å grains. The theory also yields an explanation for the anomalous absorption which is observed experimentally in such films near the percolation threshold and can reach 40%!
