Stopping power of a superlattice and the wake potential of swift ions

Abstract

The stopping power (energy loss per unit path length) and wake potential for swift ions injected into a type I superlattice are calculated within the self-consistent-field approximation. Explicit analytic results are presented in terms of the dynamic nonlocal polarizability of a two-dimensional electron gas. The particle is assumed to travel parralel to the plasma sheets. The stopping power is determined as a function of the distance of the fast particle from the two-dimensional plasma plane, as well as its velocity.
