The spin-1 Heisenberg chain with uniaxial anisotropy and its classical counterpart

Abstract

The spin-1 Heisenberg chain with uniaxial anisotropy is related to a two dimensional roughening model with anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Using this relation some peculiar features of the phase diagram of the quantum chain can be explained naturally and predictions for the critical exponents are also obtained, which agree with previous finite size scaling studies of the quantum model. A numerical transfer matrix calculation of the free energy of the roughening model on infinite strips of small width N⩽6 yields a critical behavior consistent with the one found for the T = 0 properties of the quantum chain.
