The diffusion noise source and the steady state fluctuation-dissipation theorem for a Boltzmann gas

Abstract

The current noise source of a system in interaction with a reservoir is the diffusion noise source. This source is first derived heuristically and secondly by solving the stochastic Boltzmann equation. For a classical gas this can be done far out of equilibrium; the source then yields in a close to exact way a steady-state fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Near equilibrium an exact result is also obtainable for a quantum gas; the result then yields Nyquist's theorem or the well-known equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The occurrence of various types of diffusion coefficients is also further discussed.
