Surface Bernstein modes in a metal

Abstract

The dispersion relation for an electron gas confined by infinite potential barriers is studied using the RPA. A magnetic field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the infinite plane slab faces. There are an infinite number of plasma resonances of the Bernstein mode type near each multiple of the cyclotron frequency (nωc) in addition to magnetoplasmons which are plasmons dressed by a magnetic field. Both types of modes are of course collective oscillations of the electron charge density. Ignoring the quantum-mechanical interference terms in the RPA, we expand the dispersion relation as a power series in the wave vector q up to order q2 and obtain the surface plasma resonance near 2ωc in the long wavelength limit for films of finite thickness. Numerical calculations are done and the results are discussed.
