A symmetric boundary element method for contact problems with friction

Abstract

A symmetric boundary element method for the static contact problem with Coulomb friction is presented. The method is based on the penalty approximation, a smooth approximation of the Coulomb law of friction and a symmetric discretization of the Steklov–Poincaré operator. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is proved and a numerical example is given.
