Abstract

The paper explores the process of strategic management in the rapidly changing and largely unknown environments of new technology based businesses. Existentialist behaviour by managements is suggested whereby strategy is derived from action rather than conscious deliberation and choice. Empirical underpinning is derived from a study of 20 UK and 5 USA based new technology business (NTBBs). Certain prerequisites for NTBBs were clear: scope for experimentation; access to wide information networks; a future orientation; a clear sense of purpose compatible with their environment; strategic pragmatism; and pervasive openness facilitating exploration of opportunities.
