Abstract

Management Information Systems (MIS) planning has been considered to be central to the effective utilization of the information resources of an organization. Considerable research has been undertaken in examining organizational innovation. Much of this research has involved product or service rather than process. MIS planning can be viewed as an adoption of process innovation. In this paper we have attempted to study such a process using information theory. The data for this study were collected from 178 organizations using a questionnaire approach. It has been shown that the behavior of adoption of MIS planning is similar to the adoption to other innovations. Further it has been found that the achievement of planned goals has no significant relationship with MIS strategic planning during this adoption process. Finally the adoption process has been related to Nolan's six stages of data processing growth.
