Efficiency-coefficients in energy conversions with cogeneration

Abstract

Energy-conversion processes with cogeneration, such as the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from coal, are considered. General feasibility conditions, which originate in the laws of thermodynamics and in economic conditions, are given. The question how such processes can be characterized by efficiency coefficients is discussed from a thermodynamic point of view. It turns out that efficiency coefficients of processes with cogeneration cannot be objective quantities that assume unique numerical values in principle, but rather are arbitrary quantities the values of which are determined by several weak restrictions. This is demonstrated by a numerical example giving energy efficiency-coefficients for two home-heating systems using petroleum and coal, respectively.
