Pawpaw as a renewable energy resource for the production of alcohol fuels

Abstract

Fermentation of pawpaw (Carica Papaya L.) using brewer's yeast (Sacchromyces Carlsbengensis) and subsequent analysis of pawpaw distillate by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) produced a total alcohol content of 4%, of which 91.8% was ethanol, 4.8% methanol, 2.2% n-propanol, and the remaining 1.2% unknown components which were not alcohols. Although 4% alcohol was recorded, this is a factor of dilution of slurry. Production of alcohols from pawpaw is seen as a potential source of renewable energy in humid tropics.
