Solar enhanced oil recovery; An assessment of economic feasibility

Abstract

There are several qualitative reasons why steam enhanced oil recovery (EOR) appears to be well suited to solar energy use. These include favorable characteristics with regard to energy utilization, land availability, energy form, and geographical location. A number of technical questions require further research before the characteristics of solar enhanced oil recovery (SEOR) can be precisely specified or optimum systems designed. However, a cost model based on a number of working assumptions indicates competitiveness with conventional fuel-burning EOR systems at crude prices and solar collector system costs which can be reasonably expected to occur in the near future; e.g., for a nominal parameter set, including a solar energy system cost of $200/m2, the breakeven crude oil price is $11.90/bbl.
