Abstract

This paper deals with the design of an efficient and improved boiler and steam section of 250 MW TPP which is targeted using SuperTarget. Minimum utility requirements for both hot and cold utilities come out to be 563.69 MW and 316.92 MW. Pinch cum heuristic approach is used with six different retrofitting cases for heat recovery of flue gas and boiler blowdown of TPP because proposed HEN by SuperTarget is not feasible and very expensive. The proposed retrofitting cases are evaluated based on energy saving, enhancement in TPP efficiency and CO2 reduction. The novel heuristic approach shows that a saving in DM water of 16.8–18.1 t/h in six proposed cases. The energy savings are found to be much higher with the optimum case in comparison to other cases. The retrofitting cases demonstrate that the reductions in higher-stage extractions leads to increase power generation, and enhance efficiency of TPP. This energy utilization is targeted to contribute more overall performance and sustainability of the TPP. An efficiency improvement of 0.5 % was found in the optimum case compared to the existing system. The results are consistent and compared with that of published literature, implying that the proposed approach is viable.
