Abstract

Water electrolysis powered by renewable energy offers a transformative pathway to decarbonize urban environments and advance sustainable development. This study analyzes the techno-economic feasibility of producing 3 million tons of green hydrogen annually in southern Morocco using hybrid renewable energy systems integrating photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and biomass generators. The system was optimized for three regions: Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab. Wind turbines dominate the energy mix, supported by electrolyzers and hydrogen storage tanks. Guelmim-Oued Noun produced 934,701 tons of hydrogen annually (30.86 %) at a cost of 3.85 $/kg, Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra generated 1,061,066 tons annually (35.04 %) at 3.49 $/kg, and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab achieved 1,032,667 tons annually (34.10 %) at 3.30 $/kg. Variations in costs stem from differences in renewable resource availability and infrastructure expenses. Achieving the target production requires integrated contributions from all regions, emphasizing the need for regional optimization. This study highlights societal and economic benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner industrial processes, and enhanced energy security, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action).
