Visualization study on the ignition and combustion characteristics of highly reactive fuel under methane atmosphere

Abstract

This paper innovates by studying the ignition and combustion characteristics of high-temperature methane/air premixed gas ignited by high-activity diesel fuel in an externally heated constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). The investigation focuses on the impact of diesel energy substitution rate (ESR), diesel injection mass (Minj), diesel injection pressure (Pinj), and ambient pressure (Pamb) on the process. Results show that the CH4 equivalence ratio has dual effects on diesel ignition, with promoting effects diminishing and inhibiting effects intensifying as ESR increases from 95 % to 97 %. The flame luminescence exhibits three stages: diesel-dominated, mixed diesel and CH4, and CH4-dominated combustion. Even with the same CH4 equivalence ratio, varying experimental conditions can result in different ignition delay (ID). During the third stage at both high Pinj and Pamb, significant incomplete CH4 combustion results in a reduced heat release rate (HRR). Additionally, increasing Pamb and Pinj, and decreasing Minj, contribute to reducing the proportion of high-concentrated soot.
