Abstract

This study evaluates the scope of implementing Demand Side Management in Jharkhand, a state rich in minerals and coal, but far-behind other states of India as per several development indicators. Also, despite its vast renewable energy potential of 18,508 MW, the state has only installed 187.95 MW, relying heavily on coal for its energy needs. The work presented herein attempts to address the critical need for Jharkhand to align with India's climate commitments, including achieving Net Zero by 2070. Using the Low Emissions Analysis Platform software, eight scenarios have been analysed from 2023 to 2070. The results indicate a 20.29 % reduction in energy demand, and a 24.25 % avoidance in energy generation by 2070 with application of Demand Side Management, compared to the baseline scenario. The most substantial energy demand reduction is observed in the domestic sector (65.09 %). Additionally, Demand Side Management is seen to decrease carbon dioxide emissions when combined with coal and achieves the highest emission reduction in 2041. The study also highlights that while coal-centric strategies might be financially viable in the short term, the combination of coal, renewable energy, and Demand Side Management leads to significant long-term reductions in both installed capacity addition and greenhouse gas emission.
