Abstract

Efficient thermal management is crucial for the safety and high-performance of battery packs in electric vehicles (EVs). A battery thermal management system (BTMS) with toothed liquid-cooling plate channels and varied fluid media is proposed to enhance the system heat dissipation. Effects of channel structure, fluid media, and flow directions on Li-ion battery pack thermal performance are investigated and analyzed. The results reveal that the cooling plate setting, i.e. straight (#S), elliptical (#E), prismatic (#P) and cylindrical (#C) channels, significantly affects the cooling performance of the BTMS, where the pack with #C channels exhibits superior heat dissipation. For the system with cylindrical flow channels, effects of different coolants, such as water-based nanofluids and engine oil, are tested, and the BTMS with #C channels and engine oil displays a favorable temperature distribution of ΔT = 3.71 °C. The BTMS with alternated flow directions significantly improves the uniformity of temperature distribution in the battery pack. Specifically, the BTMS #C-in-C4 with engine oil achieves the minimum value of ΔT = 3.23 °C and Tmax of the battery pack is kept below safety thresholds. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing thermal management strategies to enhance the efficiency and safety of battery packs in EVs.
