A biomass gasifier-fueled externally fired air turbine cycle combined with a solar compressed air energy storage system for multi-product outputs: Exergy-economic-environmental analysis and multi-aspect optimization

Abstract

Air turbine cycle (ATC) and compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems possess a significant quantity of residual energy which can be effectively recuperated through the employment of bottoming cycles to augment the overall system performance. In the present research, a biomass-fired ATC and a solar power tower-fired CAES system are combined in a novel configuration. The output power of ATC is fed to CAES compressors in charging time and the waste energy of the systems is recovered in bottoming subsystems. A coupled steam Rankine cycle/reverse osmosis desalination unit and a residential hot water heat exchanger are used for the unused heat recovery of ATC. Furthermore, an absorption chiller and a coupled trilateral cycles/alkaline electrolyzer are used to waste heat elimination of the charging and discharging period of the CAES layout. A 4E study is conducted on the proposed design through base case analysis, parametric study, and design optimization. Considering four influential design variables, the results of optimization show an exergy round trip efficiency, total cost rate, and unit cost of products are obtained as 38.24 %, 18772.86 US$/h, and 104.82 US$/GJ.
