Shedding light on residential consumers

Author

Abstract

This article presents a study of lighting in the residential sector and a framework for estimating the associated electricity demand. Differences and similarities in household use and demand for lighting in different countries are presented. Occupant behavior is as important as dwelling characteristics. Estimates of electricity needed for lighting, combined with a better understanding of occupant behavior, will enable planners to develop forecasting models and fine-tune energy-efficient lighting programs. Recommendations are made for future work that could improve our knowledge of lighting use and electricity demand in the residential sector.
