Wind and solar energy in Qatar

Abstract

The availability of solar and wind energy in Qatar has been evaluated. The average power and the maximum attainable wind power density were found to be 59 and 35 W m−2, respectively. The maximum attainable wind potential per year is 306 kW m−2 yr−1, which corresponds to an energy of 1.1 GJ m−2 yr−1. The average solar intensity is 559 W m−2 and leads to values of 2.5 MWh m−2 yr−1 and 9 GJ m−2 yr−2. An empirical equation that allows estimation of the solar irradiation at any location in Qatar is presented.
