Outlook for petroleum products in Sri Lanka

Abstract

The liberalization of Sri Lanka's economy in 1978 resulted in an acceleration of the economic growth rate. This in turn has resulted in an increase in consumption of petroleum fuels by the transportation sector. In the short term, petroleum consumption for electricity generation also increased because of insufficient rainfall to power hydroelectric plants and also because of the rapid increase in electricity consumption that accompanied the accelerated economic growth. In the long term, use of petroleum fuels for electricity generation is considered a stopgap measure to be used only during prolonged periods of drought. Consumption of transportation fuels will continue to increase, with diesel increasing at a much higher rate because of its relatively low price and its use in public and mass transportation.
