The changing role of refiners in Singapore

Abstract

Refineries in Singapore will bear the brunt of increased competition from OPEC product exports. With expanded storage facilities, however, Singapore's role as an oil trading center will be expanded to attract new spot-processing business. Singapore refiners hope that many oil-producing nations, as well as traders, will process crude oil in Singapore and sell it on the growing spot-products market. The declining processing costs in Singapore may even persuade some neighboring countries to defer plans for adding new refining capacities.
