Abstract

A total energy census has been obtained for the isolated island of Eigg (56 °53′N, 6 °9′W), with 27 permanently occupied houses and a resident population of 64. Detailed energy audits for every property and energy-consuming activity have been summed to find total island use. Accuracy is checked by 1.(a) obtaining other independent sums for the island supply and intermediate transactions, and2.(b) obtaining a redundancy of information from studying both supply and enduse. Domestic and economic activities on the island require an average per capita power supply of 2.2 kW (19,000 kWh/yr). The 12 types of primary supply (including biofuels, hydro and wind supplies), 10 end-uses (including local transport and agriculture), household diesel electricity generation (average efficiency 17%), and all intermediate transformations have been studied.
