The history of offshore hydrocarbon exploration in Malaysia

Abstract

Petroleum exploration of offshore Malaysia began in the 1950s with the introduction of marine seismic surveys off Sarawak. Offshore drilling commenced in 1957 and began to accelerate rapidly around 1966. At the end of 1982, over 295,000 line-km of marine seismic data had been acquired and more than 500 exploratory/appraisal wells had been drilled. More than 250 structures had been tested and more than 100 significant discoveries were made. The first offshore oil field in Malaysia was brought into production in 1968 offshore of Sarawak. By the end of 1982, a total of 19 oil fields and one gas field were in production. Another oil field and two gas fields are currently being developed.
