Abstract

We present a parasitic model to explore the complex interaction between the desert shrub Haloxylon ammodendron and its parasitic plant Cistanche deserticola. This model incorporates the influence of harvesting practices on the host plant, which can lead to strong, weak, or no Allee effects, thereby significantly impacting the coexistence dynamics of the host-parasite system. Through a comprehensive analysis of the model’s global dynamics, we investigate the existence and stability of equilibria, as well as Hopf and heteroclinic bifurcations. These findings offer a comprehensive understanding of how the host-parasite system responds to different levels of harvesting intensity, providing valuable insights for ecological management. Our results underscore the importance of managing harvesting intensity as a critical strategy for preserving the vitality of these desert species, their parasitic counterparts, and ultimately, safeguarding the biodiversity of desert ecosystems.
