Energy thrift in industry

Abstract

The UK's long-term energy future is so uncertain that there is a need for continued vigilance with respect to industrial energy thrift. However, the British Government's [`]laissez-faire' attitude, the low priority in general attributed to conservation industry, and the persisting indifference to energy wastage have led to highly inefficient practices. Thus an analysis of the effective use of energy in a large manufacturing plant, incurring a fuel bill of c. £107 per annum, has been undertaken using monthly energy-consumption and environmental data. The analysis was performed using a suite of interactive, linked computer programs, and significant energy-saving opportunities have been identified. Such an analysis, which emphasises the display of data in graphical form, is intended to heighten management's awareness of the annual variations in energy demand according to the environmental conditions. It also indicates the relative contributions from the different energy types employed towards the total consumption and cost. Such an energy audit is usually considered to be a significant step towards improving energy effectiveness in industry.
