Experimental studies on a solar thermal-power plant

Abstract

The performance characteristics of the Rankine engine thermal-to-mechanical energy conversion subsystem of a 10 kW solar power plant are presented in this paper. The thermal and mechanical efficiencies of the prime mover and the overall efficiency of the system are evaluated as functions of electrical load and solar-heated water temperature. The thermal efficiency is observed to vary in the range of 8 to 12% and is found to increase with the electrical load and also with the temperature of the hot water supplied to the boiler. The range of variation in mechanical efficiency is from 55 to 80%, while the overall system efficiency is found to lie in the range of 1 to 3%.
