Evaluación de la exposición de poblaciones y hospitales al aumento del nivel del mar en las zonas costeras bajas de América Latina y el Caribe

Abstract

El cambio climático conlleva un aumento del nivel del mar que se asocia con una mayor frecuencia e intensidad de inundaciones, erosión, pérdida de tierras y humedales e intrusión de agua salada, lo que amenaza directamente a las poblaciones e infraestructura costeras. Mediante la integración de datos de alta resolución sobre la población y la ubicación de los hospitales, se estiman las poblaciones y la infraestructura en riesgo en las zonas costeras de baja elevación y se examina la exposición de 41 millones de personas y 1.448 hospitales de América Latina y el Caribe a las consecuencias del aumento del nivel del mar. La aplicación de técnicas avanzadas de análisis espacial y de datos recientes, permite mejoras respecto de estimaciones previas. Nuestros hallazgos destacan la necesidad urgente de aplicar estrategias focalizadas de adaptación para proteger a las poblaciones y la infraestructura de salud de los efectos del cambio climático.
