La expansión educativa en la Argentina, Chile y el Uruguay y su incidencia en la edad al primer nacimiento

Abstract

La expansión educativa ha sido el principal impulsor del aplazamiento de la maternidad en los países industrializados. En el presente artículo se examinan los casos de la Argentina, Chile y el Uruguay desde una perspectiva de cohortes. Se aplicaron tablas de fecundidad para calcular la probabilidad de permanecer sin hijos entre los 12 y 44 años, por país, cohorte y grupo educativo, y se utilizaron métodos de estandarización y descomposición. Los resultados muestran que las mujeres con menor nivel educativo de la cohorte más joven presentan mayores probabilidades de convertirse en madres a edades más tempranas, mientras que las más educadas están posponiendo el primer nacimiento. En este estudio se pone de relieve cómo los factores contextuales e institucionales influyen de manera crucial en la magnitud del impacto de la expansión educativa y en la configuración de cómo se desarrolla la transición hacia la postergación de la maternidad en la región.
