El estudio de la salud reproductiva y los censos de 2010: la fecundidad adolescente y la mortalidad materna

Abstract

En el presente artículo se debate la pertinencia de los censos de población como fuente de información para el seguimiento de dos indicadores de salud reproductiva: la fecundidad adolescente y la mortalidad materna. Además de reconocerse la importancia de los censos en la realización de estos estudios, se resalta que es necesario redoblar los esfuerzos para garantizar la calidad de los datos en ambos casos. En cuanto a la fecundidad adolescente, cuando las preguntas se formulan a mujeres muy jóvenes, se presenta mayor omisión de respuestas, lo que resta potencial al análisis. Disponer de antecedentes específicos ayuda a tomar la mejor decisión sobre la edad a partir de la cual se aplican las preguntas de fecundidad, para obtener información de calidad sobre edades tempranas. En el caso de la mortalidad materna, se debe apuntar a la comprensión, por parte de los empadronadores, supervisores y demás personal involucrado en la recolección, de lo que se define como muerte materna, con el fin de captar cabalmente el número de casos ocurridos.
