El aborto inducido como causa de mortalidad materna en América Latina

Abstract

En el marco de una aguda subdeclaración de la mortalidad, la OPS estima que anualmente ocurren 28 mil muertes maternas en la región (p.259) con una razón de cerca de 220 muertes por 100 mil nacidos vivos y diferencias marcadas entre países (p.260). Como cifra mínima se estima que las muertes relacionadas con abortos alcanzan a 5 mil al año (p.263). La tasa de mortalidad producto de los abortos fluctuaría entre 83 y 250 muertes por 100 mil abortos, a lo que se suma la morbilidad resultante de prácticas abortivas poco seguras (p.264). Estimaciones recientes para Chile indican que en 1987 se hospitalizaron 31.966 mujeres por complicaciones asociadas al aborto provocado y espontáneo (p.265). El número total de abortos fue de alrededor de 195 mil de los cuales 176 mil habrían sido provocados.
