Medio ambiente y desarrollo sostenible: desafíos contemporáneos para la CEPAL y América Latina y el Caribe

Abstract

La sostenibilidad ambiental es un factor determinante para la viabilidad del desarrollo. América Latina y el Caribe imita un patrón de consumo y producción mundial que es insostenible y cuyas consecuencias, en forma de degradación ambiental, pérdida de biodiversidad y ecosistemas y alteraciones climáticas, afectan la calidad de vida de la población y limitan su capacidad de crecimiento. En el artículo se presentan algunos hechos estilizados del modelo de desarrollo de la región, así como la manera en que se ha tratado la sostenibilidad en el pensamiento de la CEPAL y, someramente, en otras corrientes económicas. Se concluye con algunas recomendaciones de política dirigidas a conciliar el crecimiento y la sostenibilidad ambiental, considerando la riqueza ambiental y de recursos naturales de la región, su posición en la economía internacional y la necesidad de realizar apuestas productivas que brinden un gran impulso para la sostenibilidad y fomenten transiciones justas ante el desafío del cambio climático.
