El regionalismo abierto y la integración económica

Abstract

La integración económica en América Latina ha entrado en una nueva etapa, condicionada por nuevas estrategias de desarrollo emprendidas sobre todo por gobiernos elegidos democráticamente y orientada a ajustarse a una economía mundial cambiada y cada vez más exigente, procurando simultáneamente aumentar la competitividad de los países latinoamericanos. En la primera sección de este artículo se reseñan brevemente los hechos salientes de esta nueva etapa de integración económica y, a continuación, se explican los determinantes principales del significativo crecimiento de los flujos recíprocos de comercio e inversión registrado en la región en los años noventa. En una tercera sección se explora el sentido del "regionalismo abierto", una propuesta formulada por la CEPAL sobre la integración económica actual en la región. Por último, se distinguen algunos de los retos que tal integración podría enfrentar en el futuro.
