Estratificación y movilidad social en Guatemala

Abstract

En este artículo se conjugan dos elementos trascendentales de la estructura socialde un país: la estratificación y la movilidad social. La aproximación a la estructurasocial de Guatemala se realiza mediante la adaptación de dos enfoques de clasessociales utilizados con frecuencia en estudios relativos al tema. Se trata de unesfuerzo por dibujar la pirámide social guatemalteca donde, más que clases, seesbozan estratos sobre la base de datos de ocupación laboral. El análisis estadísticode la información proveniente de una encuesta sobre las condiciones de vida aportaantecedentes acerca del tema de la movilidad social, a fin de ilustrar la movilidadeducacional y ocupacional en el país. Los resultados señalan la existencia de unaestructura social piramidal y una baja movilidad educacional y ocupacional de loshijos con respecto a los padres. Asimismo, muestran desigualdad de oportunidadesde movilidad según sexo y grupo étnico.
