Educación y mercado del trabajo en América Latina

Abstract

Este artículo resume los desafíos que enfrenta la educación en América Latina y los principales resultados del logro educativo en el mercado del trabajo, en medio de severas desigualdades de ingreso y sociales de larga data y ante los efectos de la globalización. Examina el grado en que un mayor logro educativo genera resultados positivos en el mercado del trabajo (ingresos laborales y empleo);y señala que, pese a cuantiosas inversiones en reforma educativa,los países latinoamericanos están quedando a la zaga de sus competidores globales. Cálculos de la autora de las primas por educación en algunos países, según logro educativo y género, muestran que la rentabilidad de la educación en el mercado del trabajo puede ser positiva, mixta o,con el desempleo, a menudo negativa. El artículo sugiere políticas encaminadas a proveer una fuerza de trabajo más competitiva y capital humano más preparado, y formula propuestas concretas para confrontar la globalización.
