Abstract

Studies on property rights, free market laws and economic freedoms have been in the literature for many years. An increase has been observed in these studies since the 90s. This increase is due to the fact that indices for the measurement of the concept of economic freedom started to be used as of the 90s. It is explained in the studies that economic freedom is important in explaining the differences in the economic performance of countries. Empirical findings show that more freedom means greater economic and institutional improvement, which is the basis for higher economic growth and development. The aim of this study is to examine the situation of Turkey in terms of economic freedom by making use of the economic freedom indices. In recent years, it is seen that Turkey is not at the expected level in terms of economic freedom, and there has been a decline in index value.
